New Yorka s first walleye spawning bed built in Cape Vincent

A spawning bed for Lake Ontario walleye, recently built on Kents Creek near Mud Bay, is the first of its kind in New York, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Designed to increase the reproduction of the walleye population in the area, the 4,000-square-foot bed was built last week about 400 feet west of the bridge on Route 12E over Kents Creek in Cape Vincent, said Carl W. Schwartz, biologist from the Cortland-based U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which led the project.

Cortland man shoplifting from Kmart caught with cocaine, marijuana and knife, police say

A Cortland man who was stopped while shoplifting from Kmart was found to have cocaine, marijuana and a butterfly knife, police said. Police were called to the Kmart on state Route 13 in Cortlandville around 3:05 p.m. Wednesday after store officials called about a shoplifter who had left the store with merchandise without paying.

Police identify bicyclist who accidentally hit man on sidewalk in Cortland

Authorities have identified and ticketed the bicyclist who was riding on a sidewalk when he hit and injured a man with his bicycle. Donovan M. Griest, 21, of Homer, has been ticketed for riding a bicycle on a sidewalk, operating a bicycle no handed and operating a bicycle while wearing head phones, Cortland police said.
