Fifteen Toledo-area Wendy's restaurants have been sold by their franchise owner to Meritage Hospitality Group Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., a publicly traded restaurant company that owns 167 quick-service and fast-casual restaurants from Michigan to Florida. Al Pruitt, president of the Wendy's operations for Meritage, said it bought the metro Toledo restaurants from Wend Partners of Cortland, N.Y. Hazmat scare over, but donations needed for Cortland Co. SPCA

Both animals and staff of the Cortland County SPCA are expected to be OK after an emergency this morning that required a hazmat team and sent several staffers to the hospital. After spending the day in outdoor cages, the 20 cats exposed to an errant and dangerous mixture of lime sulfur and bleach have returned to their adoption area and are expected to be fine.

Around 3:30 p.m. Friday Cortland police officers were called to a house at 66 Lincoln Ave. Someone arrived at the house, found the girl dead and called 911, WXHC reported. Police did not identify the 16-year-old victim, who is a student in the Cortland schools.

Central New York company faces $104,000 fine for alleged safety violations

Marietta Corp., which makes small bottles of soap and shampoo for hotel guests, is facing nearly $104,000 in fines after federal inspectors reported finding multiple safety violations at its plant in Cortland. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration said an inspection at Marietta's factory at 106 Central Ave. revealed that the company was exposing workers to chemical and fire hazards and blocked emergency exit routes.

Police: Fire at abandoned Cortland County motel being treated as suspicious

A fire that badly damaged an abandoned motel Thursday night is being investigated at suspicious, the Cortland County Sheriff's Department said. About 8:35 p.m. firefighters from Homer, Cortlandville and the city of Cortland responded to a fire at the former Budget Inn motel at 4408 U.S. Route 11 in the town of Cortlandville.

Dirt racing gets started at Skyline, Utica Rome this weekend

After a series of delays and postponements, dirt racing finally gets started this weekend in Central New York as both Skyline Raceway in Cortland and Utica Rome Speedway in Vernon have their openers set for Saturday and Sunday while the Fulton Speedway will go with a practice session Saturday afternoon. A lot has changed at Utica Rome as new owners Bill and Kim Shea put on their first show.
